CBS News Doesn't Renew '60 Minutes' Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi's Contract
CBS News has not renewed the contract of '60 Minutes' correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, months after she challenged Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss's decision to hold a segment. Alfonsi stated that the expiration of her contract 'draws to a close nearly twenty years with the network.'
Alfonsi's Statement
In her statement, Alfonsi criticized CBS leadership, calling the decision 'a deliberate choice to penalize a journalist for refusing to sanitize factually accurate reporting' that 'sends a chilling message to the entire newsroom.'
Bari Weiss Era and Changes
Under Weiss, CBS News is undergoing a major transformation, including programming changes and high-profile departures. Longtime correspondent Anderson Cooper announced his exit after the current season.
El Salvador Prison Segment Controversy
In December, Alfonsi criticized Weiss's decision to temporarily hold a segment on an El Salvador maximum-security prison. The segment eventually aired in January with additions. Alfonsi called the decision political, stating that if the standard for airing a story became government agreement, the network would cede editorial control.
Alfonsi wrote in an email, 'We go from an investigative powerhouse to a stenographer for the state.'
Alfonsi's Career
Alfonsi has reported on the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, a COVID superspreader event, Jeffrey Epstein's death, and the Parkland school shooting. She also interviewed Paul McCartney and Adam Sandler for '60 Minutes.'
