Dropbox CEO Andrew Houston Steps Down

Dropbox (NASDAQ:DBX) announced on Tuesday that CEO and co-founder Andrew Houston will step down after a transition period, promoting insider Ashraf Alkarmi to co-CEO ahead of his succession as sole chief executive. Shares fell nearly 2% following the news.

Who is Ashraf Alkarmi?

Alkarmi served as general manager of core products including file sharing, e-signature tool Sign, and document platform DocSend. Before joining Dropbox in 2024, he held product leadership roles at Vimeo, Amazon, and Meta Platforms.

AI Investments and Future Plans

Dropbox has been ramping up AI investments, including Dropbox Dash, which connects apps like Google Workspace and Slack. Alkarmi stated, "AI is changing what's possible, and our customers are going to see a very different Dropbox – faster, smarter and built around the way they actually work."

Houston's New Role and Investor Reactions

Houston will transition to executive chairman after nearly two decades. Brandon Carnovale of activist investor Half Moon Capital said the move gives Dropbox a chance to refocus in the fast-evolving cloud storage market. Half Moon had pushed for Houston's resignation in March 2025 and pressured Dropbox to scrap its dual-class structure.

New Appointments and Financial Outlook

Dropbox also appointed Michael Torres from Alphabet's Google as chief product officer, effective July 7. The company changed its CFO in December. Dropbox reported first-quarter revenue of $629.5 million, beating analysts' estimates.
