The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is unlikely to have a major impact on copper and cobalt mining operations, according to BMI, a unit of Fitch Solutions. Operations are located in the south and have successfully weathered previous disease outbreaks, most recently Covid-19.
Risks and Precautions
That said, downside risks should not be ignored. Ebola is significantly more deadly than Covid-19 and would have more severe consequences were transmission to intensify. For now, impacts are most likely to be felt by artisanal miners of gold, tin and coltan.
