Google Engineer Charged with Insider Trading on Polymarket
US Charges Google Engineer with Insider Trading on Polymarket
The U.S. Justice Department has charged a Google software engineer with using insider information to rig bets on the prediction market Polymarket, earning $1.2 million in profits. Michele Spagnuolo, a 36-year-old Italian citizen, allegedly used confidential data to bet on Google's most-searched list.
Details of the Charges
According to the complaint, Spagnuolo used insider information to bet on long-shot candidates like indie pop musician D4vd, who appeared on Google's most-searched list after being arrested for murder. The markets had placed a 'near-zero probability' that D4vd would top the list, making the bet highly profitable.
Spagnuolo, under the account 'AlphaRaccoon,' also placed bets in October that rapper Kendrick Lamar would top the list, based on internal Google data showing Lamar was on track to be the most-searched person of the year.
Investigation and Reactions
U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton stated that insider trading compromises market integrity and that such greed-driven conduct will be prosecuted. Google said it is cooperating with law enforcement and that using confidential information for bets is a serious policy breach. Spagnuolo has been placed on leave.
