A dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Kenya's Nakuru region killed at least 10 students early Thursday. The fire started around 1 a.m. local time.

Emergency rescue teams are searching the dormitory, according to Capital FM radio, citing regional police commander Samuel Ndanyi. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Firefighters and police officers have been deployed to control the blaze and evacuate other students. County police official Masoud Mwinyi told distraught parents outside the school that the situation is "distressing and saddening."
