Lilly Acquires Three Vaccine Developers, Pushes into Infectious Disease Prevention

Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) announced Tuesday it will buy three vaccine developers in deals worth up to nearly $4 billion in combined value, signaling a push by the drugmaker into infectious disease prevention.

The drugmaker, riding a wave of cash from booming demand for its obesity drugs, has been on an acquisition spree as it expands beyond weight loss to other therapeutic areas.

Deal Details

Lilly has agreed to acquire Curevo, LimmaTech Biologics, and Vaccine Co. Curevo is developing a vaccine for the prevention of shingles in adults. Curevo shareholders could receive up to $1.5 billion in cash, inclusive of an upfront payment and milestone payments.

LimmaTech, which is developing vaccines against bacterial pathogens, will be acquired for up to $780 million in cash. The Vaccine Co, developing a vaccine against Epstein-Barr virus, will be acquired for up to $1.55 billion.

Lilly shares were up 1.6% in premarket trading.
