Meta Rolls Out Subscription Plans to Fund AI Investments

Meta Platforms has started rolling out subscription plans for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and is testing new subscriptions for its AI chatbot Meta AI. This move is part of the company's strategy to recoup costs from its expensive AI infrastructure.

Pricing and Features

Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus are priced at $3.99 per month, while WhatsApp Plus costs $2.99 per month. Meta AI subscriptions are priced at $7.99 per month for the basic tier and $19.99 per month for the premium tier. Subscriptions offer enhanced features for users and premium tools for businesses and creators.

AI Investments and Layoffs

The new subscription offerings come a week after Meta laid off 10% of its 78,000-person workforce. The company plans up to $145 billion in capital spending this year, largely for AI data centers and chips. Meta's stock rose 3.7% after the announcement.

Meta Verified and Other Revenue

Meta already offers Meta Verified subscriptions for creators and businesses, ranging from $14.99 to $499.99 per month. The company reported $885 million in non-advertising revenue in the first quarter, attributed to subscriptions and WhatsApp paid messaging.
