Mistral Develops Superintelligence for Europe's AI Independence Against US Tech Giants

French AI company Mistral AI argues that Europe must develop its own AI capabilities to counter US technological dominance. The company announced it is racing to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI), also known as superintelligence.

A Critical Step for Europe's Tech Independence

Guillaume Lample, Mistral's co-founder and chief scientist, stated that superintelligence will emerge in the near future and that Europe's access to these models is vital. He emphasized that Europe cannot afford to rely on others for breakthroughs like cancer cures and scientific advancements.

Major Investments and Strategic Partnerships

Mistral has signed AI service agreements with European giants including Airbus and BMW. It is also building new data centers in France and Sweden with a total investment of $4.7 billion. CEO Arthur Mensch noted that the biggest bottleneck is the scale of investment required, but the company secures debt financing based on contracted revenues.

Geopolitical Dimensions and Strategic Autonomy in Defense

Mensch defended deals with the French military, stating that Europe needs strategic autonomy in defense systems. US tariffs and President Trump's threats over Greenland have accelerated European tech independence efforts.
