Travel Industry Opposes Trump's Threat to Sanctuary City Airports
Travel Industry Warns Against Trump Administration's Threat to Sanctuary City Airports
Major trade groups for airlines and hotels are raising alarms over a Trump administration threat to halt customs processing for international travelers at airports in cities that do not cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told Fox News that the administration is planning for Customs and Border Protection to stop processing international flights at so-called "sanctuary city" airports. "They're barricading our employees from coming in and out of the facility, then why are we processing international flights into the airport there?" Mullin said.
The U.S. Travel Association warned that such a move would have devastating consequences for the travel industry and communities that depend on international visitation. Airlines for America also cautioned that reducing CBP staffing at major airports would cause significant operational disruption to carriers, travelers, and international cargo flow.
