Uber, Lyft Drivers in Massachusetts Form First US Ride-Share Union

Ride-share drivers for Uber and Lyft have unionized in Massachusetts, forming what officials say is the first officially recognized organization in the U.S. to represent gig workers. The App Drivers Union was certified to represent nearly 70,000 drivers.

Unionization Process

The union was formed after voters approved a ballot measure in November 2024, allowing drivers to organize and bargain collectively over pay and benefits. Drivers collected signatures from at least 25% of active drivers to meet the requirement.

Support and Reactions

Governor Maura Healey called it a 'game changer for ride-share workers across this country.' The union is backed by 32BJ SEIU and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Lyft committed to engaging in good faith, while Uber did not comment.

Developments in Other States

Similar legislation has been signed in California and is pending in Illinois. Massachusetts' move sets a precedent for unionization efforts nationwide.
