CFPB to relocate all nationwide staff to Washington headquarters

The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) announced it will reassign virtually all staff nationwide to its Washington headquarters later this year, a move likely to weaken the agency that the Trump administration seeks to minimize or eliminate.

Relocation and end of remote work

Approximately 450 employees stationed near former regional offices in San Francisco, Atlanta, Chicago, and New York must report to Washington by August 31. Headquarters staff will return to the office five days a week starting in July.

Agency's future uncertain

The Trump administration has been battling in court for authorization to dismiss most of the agency's workforce. Created in 2010, the CFPB is seen by the administration as a politicized burden, while Democrats defend it as a consumer protector. About one-third of the workforce has already left, and the administration seeks to dismiss half of the remaining employees.
