US FTC Probes Surge in Fertilizer Prices

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced it is investigating rising fertilizer prices following a spike due to the war in Iran. Chairman Andrew Ferguson stated at an event with farmers in Texas that the agency launched a major industry-wide investigation into the precipitous rise in fertilizer prices affecting the nation's farmers.

Farmers Under Pressure

Soaring fertilizer and fuel costs due to the conflict have squeezed farmers planting crops like corn, while a resurgent drought in parts of the U.S. Plains adds to their woes. Some growers face a fourth consecutive year of shrinking margins.

Middle East Impact

The Middle East is a key fertilizer production hub, and much of global fertilizer trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz, where traffic has been disrupted by the war. The FTC has issued a civil investigative demand as part of the probe, an administrative order to obtain documents or testimony.
